ESTCOURT KZN: Man kills six, injures one before being shot dead by police

Police are investigating six counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and an inquest across three districts in KwaZulu-Natal

In what has been described as a ‘shooting spree’ that spanned two towns, six people were murdered by one man yesterday (September 11).

It is alleged that a 26-year-old man, who is a security guard, shot and killed his colleague in New Formosa, Estcourt in a dense and bushy area at about 11am.

“The victim sustained gunshot wounds to the head. There was a veld fire and the body was partially burnt,” commented police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker.

The man then drove to Mooi River in a farm security vehicle where five people were gunned down.

“Following the initial murder, he went to a farm in Mooi River where he killed another security guard, aged 42. The suspect then proceeded to Bruntville where he shot and killed his ex-girlfriend’s sister and her three children, aged between five and 13 years, before fleeing the scene,” said Brigadier Naicker.

The man then proceeded to his ex-girlfriend’s workplace in Alexandra Terrace in Mooi River where he fired several shots at her before fleeing the scene. The 25-year-old woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

“The suspect fled the scene towards Kranskop where police officers intercepted him. He resisted arrest and opened fire at the police officers. The suspect was fatally wounded in the ensuing shootout. Police are investigating six counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and an inquest across three districts in KwaZulu-Natal,” concluded Brigadier Naicker.
