NEWCASTLE KZN: Town hosts ANC’s first KZN regional conference since Covid-19

The first day of the conference centred on messages of support from ANC partners, and the opening addresses.

According to reporters on the ground, Mayor of Newcastle, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba was ‘conspicuously absent’ from the first day of the African National Congress (ANC) KwaZulu-Natal Regional Conference, which began today (September 4).

Certain speakers among the ANC’s allies commented on his alleged absence, calling it ‘crazy’ that the chairperson of the Emalahleni region and the town’s mayor was not present while others on the regional executive were.

Journalists say the first day of the conference centred on messages of support from the ANC’s partners, the South African Communist Party, the South African National Civic Organisation, and the Congress of South African Trade Unions, as well as the opening addresses from the ANC.

While the presentation of reports and certain other sessions will be closed to the press, journalists say more information should be available tomorrow when the election of key regional positions takes place. This may also shed some light on the party’s candidates for the position of mayor in towns the ANC is still able to contest next month.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information comes in – also be sure to read the regional Northern Natal News next week for details.
