ESTCOURT KZN: Learners shine a light on gender injustices

The learners were encouraged to support and uplift one another

Estcourt Secondary School, together with Ithembalethu Outreach Centre, sought to empower the fairer sex through protest action on August 19, during which they created awareness surrounding gender-based violence (GBV).

The Grade 12 learners, as part of their Life Orientation studies, embraced the opportunity this Women’s Month to shed some light on abuses and injustices suffered by especially women in society.

The learners were encouraged to support and uplift one another, and women were encouraged to take charge of their own circumstances and destiny.

“Women and men who can offer support, guidance and direction should be heard!” was the message.

The learners explained that GBV is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power and harmful norms; a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue. The children embraced the opportunity to share their message with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) battalion stationed in Estcourt.

The School Governing Body (SGB), principal and staff are extremely grateful to the organisers of this advocacy programme, Mr A Maniram (Life Orientation educator), Sister Maureen, Sister Beata and their team of care workers for their continued social development and counselling support within the school. The school would like to thank Hyperzone for their donation of refreshments for the Grade 12 learners.
