ESTCOURT KZN: Bulldozer purchased to improve compliance at landfill site

According to municipal manager Patrick Mkhize, this is a ‘leap of hope’ for the landfill site to ensure compliance with current expected environmental health standards

To improve service delivery, specifically at the landfill site, the local municipality purchased a bulldozer which was delivered on August 18.

According to municipal manager Patrick Mkhize, this is a ‘leap of hope’ for the landfill site to ensure compliance with current expected environmental health standards.

“This bulldozer was purchased through the use of the Covid-19 Grant allocated to the Community Services Department (Waste Management Section) to improve conditions at the landfill site. The new licence issued in April 2021, during the upgrade from the old permit, requires total compliance with the current legislation. The total cost of this bulldozer is R4,500,000,” commented Mr Mkhize.

He substantiated that the acquisition of the new bulldozer would assist in improving compliance in the following ways:

1. Construction of cells.
2. Pushing of waste and backlog to the constructed cells.
3. Daily covering of waste using the available covering material, such as top soil.
4. Assisting the fire-fighting section during the process of extinguishing fires.
