NEWCASTLE KZN: Family pays tribute to the iconic Mona Maharaj
Mona was a community stalwart, cancer survivor, and role model who served as a volunteer for many local organisations.
Friends and family bid a tearful farewell recently to a woman aptly described at her funeral as the ‘Mother Teresa’ of Newcastle.Â
Recognition of Malikadevi Mona Maharaj is particularly significant during August, a month dedicated to celebrating women of strength and recognising their contributions to society. Mona was a community stalwart, cancer survivor, and role model who served as a volunteer for many local organisations.
She passed away earlier this month from a Covid-19 related illness.
“[Mona] was a woman dedicated to assisting everyone who came across her path, rich or poor, young or old, whether they needed a hug and a kind word, medical attention or a tin of beans.”
