Ladysmith KZN: SADTU protests at Department of Education offices

The Department of Education budget cut is the cause of the problem?

Yesterday (August 17), SADTU members from in and around Ladysmith held a protest within the Department of Education offices in Murchison Street.

The protesters presented a letter of demands that included: teachers’ posts that remain unfilled, substitute teachers not being appointed, temporary teachers not paid, teacher training not taking place, Grade R teachers not being paid enough, qualifications of Grade R teachers not being recognised, and rural incentives not paid to deserving teachers.

Regional Deputy Secretary Bayavuya Sokhela said the problem they are faced with doesn’t affect only the Uthukela District, but the whole province.

Sokhela says the reason for this is primarily the budget cut to the Department of Education.
