On last week’s front page of the Northern Natal Courier, we reported on the news that Buffalo Coal were granted environmental authorisation which will allow for the mining of the old Balgray Colliery.Â
The colliery is situated on Mpati Hill.Â
Without the project, over 350 jobs would be in jeopardy as well as the millions or so that Buffalo Coal injects monthly into the local economy. The remining of the colliery will also create temporary jobs during the set-up phase. Construction activities are expected to begin in January next year.
While the news is a blessing for the area and the economy, concerns were raised about the environmental impact that mining activities would have in the area.Â
