Ladysmith KZN: Coaching tennis to empower young players

Marisa Otto is a professional coach who studied sports coaching in Johannesburg, and has six years' experience under her belt

Former Ladysmith High School (LHS) pupil Marisa Otto was spotted last Saturday morning (August 7), doing some tennis coaching with Clarie Gee. Marisa is a professional coach who studied sports coaching in Johannesburg, and has six years’ experience behind her.

She played tennis at school and represented LHS in Northern Natal matches years ago.

Marisa not only plays tennis, but is also a fan who keeps up with the sport at international level. After sustaining a leg injury, she took on coaching as a full-time profession and never looked back. She co-ordinates all kinds of games for young children whom she tutors, as well as adults.

Clarie Gee, who is Marisa’s student, says she adores her coach. “She is simply amazing the way she teaches and helps me with my technique. I’m certainly no pro, but I’m getting there,” she laughs.

Clarie has two lessons a week, and feels so empowered and motivated by the game. “Tennis is a great stress-reliever and I’m looking forward to the day when I am ready to compete at big tournaments against tough opposition, because I know the day will come.”
