ESTCOURT KZN: Awards for sign language learners

Sign language educator Mr Khumalo said he was "beyond excited and proud" of the learners

‘Accolades’ and ‘acknowledgement’ were the themes for the day at the Project Life Special Needs Education & Care Facility on August 7.

The learners and staff who have been learning sign language received awards for their dedication.

What started as a challenge to all the students in April became a way of life and by the end of July, they were proud to say that they had acquired a new skill. Under the direction of sign language instructor Sabelo Khumalo, the 21 students have been developing basic sign language skills, which include alphabets, colours, days of the week and much more.

In June, the learners were assessed by officials during their South African Sign Language Assessment, which all of the learners passed.

To salute their efforts, a special awards ceremony was held at Project Life, where certificates, applause, cheers and dancing was in abundance.

Project Life founder Desiree Moonsamy welcomed the guests and said that not many people would take up the challenge to learn sign language. She added that she was proud of the results that were accomplished.

She further encouraged parents, family members and friends to learn sign language to support the special needs learners from Project Life.

Sign language educator Mr Khumalo said he was “beyond excited and proud” of the learners. As the special awards certificates were handed out, there was praise from the audience for each learner. The day ended with lunch for everyone.
