NEWCASTLE KZN: ‘Be safe and alert when using an ATM’

'Criminals often work in groups, with one being a distraction so the other can steal your card or money.'

When using an ATM, stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Never, under any circumstances, give your card or PIN (personal identification number) to anyone.

This is the advice given by Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, following reports of a number of residents falling victim to ATM fraud.

SAPS has provided the following safety tips to help residents avoid becoming a statistic:

“Also, keep your hand over the card slot to prevent anyone from ‘swiping’ or taking your card.”

“Never allow a bystander to call the toll-free stop card line on your behalf; they may mislead you into believing your card has been stopped.”
