NEWCASTLE KZN: How businesses can be safe with their cash

Avoid carrying money bags, briefcases, or displaying your deposit receipt book openly.

Cash-based small businesses have little option but to deposit money regularly.

Unfortunately, according to Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, this can also make these businesses targets for the criminal element.

She has provided the following advice for business owners, which they should follow to reduce their chances of falling victim to robbery incidents:

• Change the days and times at which you deposit cash.
• Never make your bank visits known to anyone, even those close to you.
• While waiting in line at the bank, do not openly display the money you are depositing.
• Avoid openly displaying your deposit receipt book or carrying money bags or briefcases.

“If the amount of cash you deposit on a regular basis is increasing as your business grows, consider hiring a cash management company,” she said.

• Rather than paying contract or casual workers in full view of the public, use wage accounts provided by your bank.
• On a typical ‘pay day,’ avoid driving to the bank in your company-branded vehicle.
• Consider setting up electronic wage transfers.
