DUNDEE KZN: Remembering a well respected police officer

He started his police career in Dundee in 1964 and went to Chatsworth Training College where he finished his training.

One of the town’s most respected police officers, retired detective, Warrant Officer Lutchman Beharie, passed away last Wednesday at the aged of 92.

He was born in Dundee on December 28, 1929. He was married to Chinta and they were blessed with five children: Sheila, Ashwin, Dr Ansuya Beharie, Rajesh and Vicky. Ashwin and Rajesh followed their father’s footsteps and also joined the Dundee SAPS. Mr Beharie also leaves behind nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

After matriculating in Dundee, he started working at the former Royal Hotel where he worked as a waiter for 10 years. He started his police career in Dundee in 1964 and went to Chatsworth Training College where he finished his training.

He was transferred to Dundee after completing college and joined the detective branch for many years with some good and bad memories. ‘Warrant’ as everyone knew him, was held in high esteem by both his colleagues and the community for the high standards he set and demanded of others.

He retired from the police in 1992 and in 1998 he bought Robot Cafe in Wilson Street selling takeaways where he made many good friends and continued to interact with the community He was a very caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who loved his family and friends dearly.

His other passion in life was gardening reading and socialising with family and friends. The family thanked Dr Ramdharee and staff as well as his ambulance services for the wonderful support in their time of need. They also thanked Dr Sardwalla of Ladysmith for the loving care and support and the community of Dundee for the messages, flowers  and prayers in this time of grief.
