Sometimes it’s a small donation that makes a big difference in the lives of many people.

That was the case recently in Durnacol when residents were given plenty of reason to smile thanks to an unexpected donation. The donation, courtesy of the Durnacol Skills Hub, brought much joy and much needed relief to residents of the town.

The recent unrest, which ripped through parts of KZN and Gauteng, left many households unable to get staples such as bread and milk. With distribution centres looted and set alight and delivery trucks unable to travel, stores were unable to supply shoppers with these essentials. The little that they did have was soon bought up by residents eager to get what they could, unsure of how long stock shortages would last. It’s for that reason that the Durnacol Skills Hub knew they had to do something to assist their community.

For a total of ten days, the Durnacol Skills Hub donated 50 loaves of bread and 50 litres of milk to residents of the town, ensuring that each household received one loaf and one litre. That’s a whopping 500 loaves of bread and 500 litres of milk.

For the residents, it was a huge blessing and many were extremely overwhelmed and grateful to receive basic essentials. The kids too, who were playing in some of the streets, were excited to get visitors in their areas and hurriedly ran to tell some of the Gogos that they were getting a surprise.

Campus Manager, Shavin Dookie, explained that ‘coming together as an institution to serve the community was part of the organisation’s social responsibility.’

And serve the community they did. The donations of bread and milk went a long way into not only providing meals for families but also for providing hope during what was a difficult time for many.
