Ladysmith KZN: Soldier tells his story after saving child from burning house

"The doors were locked, so I used a brick to break the window..."

On July 22, Sergeant Mabanga heroically risked his life to rescue a child trapped in a burning house.

Mabanga, who was returning from a shopping centre, says that when he passed the house, he immediately saw that it was on fire. He reacted by running into the yard and around the house to see if anyone was inside.

Women living in an outbuilding came out when they heard him shouting, and he led them to an ‘assembly point’ where they would be safe. The ladies told him there was a child inside the “big room” that had just caught fire.

“I could hear the child crying inside the house. The doors were locked, so I used a brick to break the window and managed to pull the child out. I told myself that: No matter what happens, I will do everything in my power to rescue the young girl,” said Sergeant. Mabanga, who was quite shaken himself after the ordeal.

The incident was reported to his seniors and they are incredibly proud of his heroic bravery.
