Ladysmith KZN: Future uncertain for many businesses at Ezakheni Plaza

Most of the tenants are not even sure if they will be able to resume trading

Today (July 22), the managing director of the Ezakheni Plaza, Mr Jason McCormick, had his very first visit to the mall after many shops were looted and destroyed during the recent unrest.

Mr McCormick met with the tenants of the centre, who are mostly small business entrepreneurs. During the meeting, Mc Cormick said he was saddened by what has happened.

The tenants stressed their concerns, with most of them badly affected by the situation to the extent that they are not even sure if they will be able to resume trading again, since they used loans to start their businesses.

Mr Simon Gumede from the municipality’s Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) programme said the government as a whole has committed to help where they can during this difficult period. “I would advise that the management of the centre, together with the tenants, compile a report detailing the damage and the cost so that government knows how they can help,” said Mr Gumede.
