NEWCASTLE KZN: SAPS to be out ‘in full force’ tomorrow

"As the CPF... [we] cannot recommend any business or factory to open or stay closed..."

Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Nomalungelo Gina met with stakeholders in Newcastle earlier today.

Johan Pieters, who represents both the Newcastle Growth Coalition and the Newcastle Community Policing Forum (CPF), said the meeting concerned Newcastle and its future.

During the meeting, stakeholders echoed calls for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to intervene and protect the town. Requests for troop deployment have also been made to the office of KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala, SAPS at a provincial level and SANDF directly.

“As the CPF, we had a discussion regarding safety of our city and community. The CPF cannot recommend any business or factory to open or stay closed…”

A message currently circulating on social media has requested volunteers to assist with community safety patrols across Newcastle, to assist with the protection of the town from unrest.

SAPS officials are also said to be out ‘in full force’ to counter any unrest, rioting or looting in the area.
