NEWCASTLE KZN: Mayor to visit areas stricken by riots and looting

The mayor will visit areas stricken by looting and will also meet with affected business owners, residents and stakeholders.

Newcastle Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba will launch an anti-looting awareness campaign today (July 15).

According to the municipality, one of the campaign’s goals is for the town’s first citizen to go on a ‘walkabout’ and assess the extent of looting and damage. He is also expected to meet affected business owners, residents and stakeholders.

The campaign begins at 1pm at the Newcastle Corner parking area, with the walkabout to begin at 1.30pm.

Cllr Mahlaba and his entourage will first proceed from Allen Street to Scott and Harding Streets, followed by a radio interview at 2pm. Thereafter, the convoy will proceed to the Ithala Centre in Madadeni to see damage firsthand and engage with the business sector.

Later in the afternoon, he will visit the South African Brewery wholesaler and Theku Plaza mall to see the extent of the damage there.

In a statement yesterday, Cllr Mahlaba strongly condemned acts of looting and the destruction of the local economy, stating that over the past few days, the town’s ‘conscience, moral sense, humanity and moral fibre has been tested’.
