Ladysmith KZN: Town taken over by looting and violent protests

SANDF soldiers fired shots to disperse protesters in Kandahar Avenue

Ladysmith was literally attacked by looters/protesters today (July 12). The town was in complete chaos, as protesters stoned vehicles and looted shops in Illing Road. It is reported that the abattoir was looted, as well as a butchery. 

The chaos continued during the afternoon, as Safari Den in Queen Street was targeted. The windows were smashed and glass was scattered all over the road.

Municipal infrastructure was damaged and protesters threw rocks at passing vehicles.

The violence then continued in Kandahar Avenue, where a bottle store was looted. 

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was deployed to Kandahar Avenue, with soldiers firing shots to disperse the protesters.  

The protesters also started a fire in Thompson Road earlier in the day and stacks of hay burnt to ashes.

Residents have reported hearing gunshots and are afraid for their property, as well as their lives.

It is advised that people stay at home, as violence continues to erupt.
