VRYHEID KZN: 160 bicycles to get needy learners to school in the Zululand District

This is part of the Shovakalula Bicycle Programme and is a government intervention to provide mobility to learners who have to travel more than three kilometres to get to school.

Statistics show that two-thirds (67%) of South African learners walk to school… With this in mind, and as part of opening the doors of learning and teaching, KwaZulu-Natal Acting Head of Department for Transport Mr Zakhele Mqayi handed over 160 bicycles to needy learners in Vryheid on Saturday at eMondlo Community Hall.

This is part of the Shovakalula Bicycle Programme and is a government intervention to provide mobility to learners who have to travel more than three kilometres to get to school. This is said to be a joint operation between KwaZulu-Natal and the Department of Education.

During her budget speech last month, MEC Peggy Nkonyeni announced that this year, the Department of Education will distribute more than 2400 bicycles to learners in rural schools. As part of the Shovakalula Bicycle Programme in the Zululand District, MEC Nkonyeni will distribute 160 bicycles to six priority schools in the area.
