ESTCOURT KZN: Apprehension settles over staff at main street businesses

“We are seeing on social media that some of the protests are becoming violent, so we are afraid”

After yesterday’s (July 9) march through the central business district by ‘Free Zuma’ supporters, apprehension has settled over some staff at stores in town.

Jacob Zuma supporters took to the streets yesterday between 3pm-4pm to call for former president Jacob Zuma’s release from prison.

Mr Zuma is currently detained at the Estcourt Correctional Centre after handing himself over to police during the early hours of Thursday (July 8) morning.

Protest action has erupted across parts of KwaZulu-Natal as supporters vow to ‘Shutdown KZN’.

A chain store manager who spoke to the Estcourt News said that all was ‘quiet’ in Harding Street today (July 100 however, precautions were being taken.

“We have some of our shutters down but we are open. We’re just weary of looting,” said the manager.

Another staff member from a Harding Street business said that “there is definitely a tense atmosphere” in town.

“We are seeing on social media that some of the protests are becoming violent, so we are afraid,” said the local.
