NEWCASTLE KZN: Municipality mourns the passing of senior official

Dr Mahlubi-Mbatha joined the municipality as SED for Corporate Services in August 2018.

Mayor of Newcastle, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba and municipal employees are ‘deeply saddened and shocked’ by the untimely passing of Strategic Executive Director (SED) for Corporate Services, Dr Nompumelelo Mahlubi-Mbatha this morning (July 9).

In a press statement this afternoon from the municipal Communications Unit, Dr Mahlubi-Mbatha is said to have left an indelible mark in the public sector, particularly in the local government sphere and in the Department of Education.

“She has always maintained a strong zeal and conviction in empowering the youth, in particular the girl-child. As a PhD holder, an academic, and an activist, Dr Mahlubi-Mbatha has always agitated for the youth of Newcastle to prioritise education above all,” read the statement.

Cllr Mahlaba expressed ‘a deep sense of sadness and loss’ and said the passing of Dr Mahlubi-Mbatha has left a void in the public sector, as well as an unimaginable loss ‘not only to the municipality and her family but to the local government fraternity’.

“Dr Mahlubi-Mbatha served the public sector with distinction. Her sterling leadership history in both the municipality and the Department of Education is unmatched and impeccable. When she left the department to join the municipality, she continued on an upward trajectory, serving the community with utmost dedication and selflessness. We will remember her for her relentless efforts of always motivating young girls to strive to achieve their academic goals,” stated Cllr Mahlaba.

In extending his condolences to the Mahlubi and Mbatha families, Cllr Mahlaba encouraged residents and particularly public servants, to emulate the late Dr Mahlubi-Mbatha. She joined the municipality as SED for Corporate Services in August 2018.

The press statement concluded by saying Dr Mahlubi-Mbatha would be remembered for her jovial and bubbly personality.

“Lala ngokuthula ntombi enhle… Phumula Shandu KaNdaba… May her soul rest in peace.”
