DUNDEE KZN: Historic church under goes repairs

Still as sprightly as ever, Robby says he never stands still.

St James Anglican Church, an historic landmark in Gladstone Street, is undergoing a welcome renovation. On Friday, the north weather vane that blew off from the top of the church about 10 years ago was finally replaced after it was lovingly redesigned and manufactured by congregant and builder Robby Fitzpatrick.

The fact that he is now 75 did not stop Robby from scaling a ladder and scaffolding up to the roof, with his assistant, Sphelele, to haul up the weather vane to place next to the other vanes. “At least the building is now balanced with three vanes, as it is supposed to be,” said Robby.

The church is also being painted. Still as sprightly as ever, Robby says he never stands still. “There is too much to do,” he laughs. He previously worked for the then NPA, but in 1984 started his own business, Robby’s Home Maintenance, and is a well-known figure in the town – especially at the Dundee Adult Centre, where he is a willing volunteer.
