VRYHEID KZN: Level 4 Lockdown again due to massive increase in infections

People are urged to continue taking care of themselves by following all the rules and regulations of the lockdown

Last week Monday (June 28), President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country will be adjusted to Alert Level 4 Lockdown due to a massive surge in new coronavirus (Covid-19) infections. In Level 4, all social, religious, political and other gatherings of any size are prohibited. Restaurants may only serve food as takeaways or delivery. This has put a lot of strain on businesses, as they will not be performing or generating money as usual. Funerals are still restricted to a maximum of 50 people and no night vigils or post-funeral gatherings are allowed.

Apart from permitted workers, no one is allowed to be outside their households from 21:00 to 04:00, which is the curfew in Alert Level 4 Lockdown. All employers should allow their employees to work from home unless it is absolutely necessary for them to perform work on-site. Many people are not happy about the sale of alcohol being prohibited (both on-site and off-site consumption), as many businesses make a living by selling liquor and many people work in alcohol-related businesses. However, this is said to ease the pressure on hospitals which are under strain. All retail stores can remain open, and factories, mines, farms and other businesses will continue to operate.

Travelling into and out of Gauteng is only permitted for work, transportation of goods, funerals and returning home, while travel between other provinces is allowed. People are urged to continue taking care of themselves by following all the rules and regulations of the lockdown – wear a mask that covers your mouth and nose when in public places. Any person who does not wear a mask in public will be committing an offence! It is also one’s responsibility to keep a safe social distance – people should stay away from closed or crowded spaces. When you are in a closed environment, open the door or windows, especially in public transportation like taxis and buses. Also, ensure that you wash your hands frequently with clean water and soap, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

The vaccination roll-out for people aged 50 and above is open now, and they are urged to go to vaccination sites to get their jab. You can register by using the online platform available on the South African Corona website; dial *134*832#; send the word ‘register’ via WhatsApp to 0600 123 456; and you can also call the national toll-free call centre on 0800 029 999, where somebody will help you register and answer any questions you may have about the vaccination roll-out.
