Ladysmith KZN: Pavements dug up and left open like ‘graves’

When the digging began, it caused damage to electrical cables

Residents in Augustine Avenue are up in arms with uThukela.

Due to a burst water pipe in the area, uThukela dug on the pavements in front of residents’ homes to fix the broken pipe.

Frustrated resident Ronnie Berner says that his pavement has been dug up for the past five weeks and nothing has been done about it.

When the digging began, it caused damage to electrical cables, which left Mr Berner as well as other residents in the area without electricity for five consecutive days.

Mr Berner explained how difficult it was without power, as food in the fridge went off and had to be thrown away.

”My gate motor blew, as well as other electrical appliances in my house, which I had to replace,” he added.

The residents describe the dig-ups as looking like ‘open graves’.

Another resident said that on windy days, the sand from the hole blows into her home and makes a mess.

After facing days without electricity, people are now questioning why the holes that were dug have not been filled in again.

According to uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza, the matter will be attended to as of today (July 3).

He added that they have been waiting for Shisalanga to open, who supply tar. There was a shutdown due to a shortage of bitumen, but they are now manufacturing.
