DUNDEE KZN: A plan to end water-shedding?

, Umzinyathi has been forced to introduce so-called daily water-shedding, which means that most of the area is without water

Endumeni’s dire water-shedding problems will finally be addressed following a successful meeting between uThukela Water and Umzinyathi District Municipality. uThukela Water is the bulk water provider, while Umzinyathi oversees the reticulation of the water.

However, with a population that is said to have quadrupled over the last 25 years and little upgrading done to the Biggarsberg Water Treatment Plant, Umzinyathi has been forced to introduce so-called daily water-shedding, which means that most of the area is without water during the day and in the early hours of the morning. This is in a bid to save scarce water resources, Umzinyathi has said.

officials are confident that the conundrum will finally be tackled following the meeting, which Luiz Cunha (uThukela Water’s financial manager) described as very productive. Speaking to the Courier after uThukela Water’s virtually-held annual general meeting, he confirmed that uThukela Water and Umzinyathi had agreed to seek solutions to the challenges (need to upgrade the Biggarsberg Water Treatment Plant) in the new financial year. A pledge has been undertaken to set aside the grant funding received for this project.
