Ladysmith KZN: Goats and cattle recovered by police

The cattle were found in a kraal built at a plantation in the Gqumaweni area

On Saturday (June 26) just after 06:00, the Bergville Stock Theft Unit was alerted that a bakkie was transporting stolen goats on the Potsheni road in Bergville. Police officers swooped on the identified area.

With the assistance of a local security company, a 25-year-old suspect was apprehended, while two others managed to flee the scene.

A total of 15 goats were found on the back of the bakkie.

It was established that the goats had been stolen on the same day in the Vimbukhalo area (Emmaus). The recovered animals were positively identified by their lawful owner.

The suspect appeared yesterday (June 28) in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court for stock theft.

In another operation on the same day, the Bergville Stock Theft Unit recovered 35 stolen cattle. The cattle were stolen in different areas around Bergville. It is alleged that on June 19, 14 cattle were stolen from a kraal in the Greenpoint area.

The cattle were found in a kraal built at a plantation in the Gqumaweni area.

In another case on June 24 this year, 21 cattle were stolen from a farm in Bergville. It is alleged that the suspects gained entry by cutting the fence. All the stolen cattle were positively identified by the lawful owners.

The suspects are still being sought by police.
