ESTCOURT KZN: Mayor has ‘successful’ meeting at hospital after patient assault

“We will be monitoring the investigation and want the outcome to be publicised because this is a matter of concern"

Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality mayor Jabulile Mbele was part of the local government delegation that convened a meeting with Estcourt Hospital management this morning (June 28).

This follows the emergence of two videos that show a violent assault on a patient at the hands of two private security company guards, one of the videos also shows two nurses at the bedside.

The mayor as well as representatives from uThukela District Municipality convened for a meeting at 7.30am.

“As a leader in the community, I strongly condemn this incident. We had a successful meeting with the chief executive officer where we got their side of the story. The nurses have been suspended and the security guards are dismissed and we are happy with that,” said Mrs Mbele.

The mayor says that this assault has roused scepticism among the community regarding care at the hospital.

“We will be monitoring the investigation and want the outcome to be publicised because this is a matter of concern. We also want the allegations of bribery and insults to be investigated. During this lockdown level four, family members will not be able to visit their loved ones in hospital and will be wondering what is happening to them,” she added.

The Health Department has not yet responded to a request for an update.
