ESTCOURT KZN: Darts player competes in international online championship

Hemraj is one of four South Africans that qualified to participate in this championship

Members of the Umtshezi Darts Association are glad to be back at their weekly games, played on Thursdays at 7pm in Shepstone Avenue.

Last week, the members gathered again for a friendly but competitive game.

It was a win for the entire club as one of its members, Hemraj Jhekarran, qualified to compete in the Online World Darts Championship.

Hemraj played against one of the best darts players in Germany, Luca Dietrich on June 13.

“I lost in the final round 3-2 but the experience was amazing. It was my first time playing someone out of South Africa, and a person that has a big name in darts in his country. I played extremely well but fell just short from the finish line, hopefully next time it will be better,” he said just minutes after the exhilarating game.

Hemraj is one of four South Africans that qualified to participate in this championship, the other contenders being Graham Fillby from Cape Town, Mercy Masenda from Umtata and Shawn Hogan from Johannesburg.

In order to qualify for the Online World Darts Championship, Hemraj had to play knock-out online games and reach an average of 65%.

“Luckily for me, my darts have improved during my time playing online darts. When I started playing online, I started with an average of 50%. Nowadays, on a good day I manage to average around 71% – 72%. My best thus far was a 76% average. My goal is to hit the 90% average,” Hemraj explained.
