VRYHEID KZN: Scrumming down in second clash against Sentraal

Fortunately, Vryheid managed to win all their line-outs, as well as some of Sentraal’s, to compensate for the struggle in the scrums

Vryheid’s first and second rugby teams measured forces for a second time against Sentraal over the weekend. This time around, Sentraal had home-ground advantage when the teams clashed on Saturday in Dundee. Compared to the previous win against Sentraal, the second team had a tougher game. Even though Vryheid excelled in the scrums and line-outs, they appeared to lack discipline in other aspects of the game and they just could not break through Sentraal’s excellent line of defence. In the first half, Vryheid ceded a lot of penalty kicks to Sentraal and were also penalised for a few high tackles. At the end of the day, these ‘mistakes’ cost Vryheid the game, eventually losing 12-19. Jaco Maritz and Oyikho Chonco managed to put points on the scoreboard with a try each. Lusanda Mkhwanazi and Chris Pretorius were crowned ‘Man of the Match’ on Vryheid’s side.

The two first teams had a tough game.

The first team had a tough battle against Sentraal’s scrumming pack. Fortunately, Vryheid managed to win all their line-outs, as well as some of Sentraal’s, to compensate for the struggle in the scrums. The backline displayed speed and accuracy, and left Sentraal in the dust. The forwards also did their part and there was no comparison between the two teams in the rucks and mauls, where Sentraal just couldn’t counter the Vryheid team. This allowed Vryheid to gain more playing advantage. Vryheid’s defence was on form as well, and they only ‘gave away’ one try to Sentraal. On the downside, both Vryheid teams lacked discipline this week, especially when Sentraal ‘protected’ their domain during the scrums and frustration among the Vryheid players caused tempers to flare. “If the Vryheid teams want to excel during the league, they will have to work harder on their patience and work together as a team,” said Jaco Maritz. On the day, Ntando Mbatha, Buhle Nene, Ben Momina, Lwazi Dlamini, Lwazi Mdluli and Themba Phiri made sure that the scoreboard filled up quickly with their individual tries. Ben Momina and Themba Phiri received the ‘Man of the Match’ award. Vryheid’s overall dominance saw them romping home with a score of 39-7. (Photos are courtesy of the Northern Natal Courier)
