Ladysmith KZN: uThukela mayor hands over water project

Each spring that was handed over to the community has five stand pumps to supply the residents with natural, clean water

On Thursday (June 24), uThukela Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko – accompanied by Ward Councillor Sokhela and Cllr Kubheka – visited Nkuthu, Emadongweni, Roodepoort and Burford (under Alfred Duma Local Municipality). The aim of the visit was to hand over two spring water standpipes and a hand pump.

The mayor stressed his concerns and said that the district is faced with the toughest service delivery impediment because of illegal connections, vandalism and unauthorised tampering of the system, which have led to severe interruptions of core services. ”We urge the community to refrain from doing these things, as they have a negative impact on the water supply.” said the district mayor.

“As the uThukela District, we are extremely grateful to members of the respective communities and councillors who are collaborating with us to ensure that the municipal infrastructure is secured and protected, so that people have access to the basic right of water,” added Mayor Mazibuko.

Each spring that was handed over to the community has five stand pumps to supply the community with natural, clean water. Mayor Mazibuko mentioned that they have devised a long-term solution to address persistent water challenges at Spioenkop Dam and need a budget. While waiting, he said they will use boreholes and springs as a short-term solution.
