Ladysmith KZN: R602 between Ladysmith and Glencoe blocked by angry protesters

Motorists travelling from Ladysmith to Dundee must use alternative routes

The R602 road, near Elandslaagte police station, has been blocked by angry protesters from the iNkunzi area (Ward 24 under Alfred Duma Local Municipality). The community members who are staging the protest say they want a bridge crossing over the iNkunzi River.

According to residents of this area, there was previously a steel bridge they were using, but it was demolished so that a modernised bridge could be built. According to the community, a construction company demolished the existing bridge a few years back and left before finishing the work.

Community member Mr Muziwemali Mweli said it has been over six years now, waiting for the construction of the new bridge they were promised.

“The pain we are faced with is unbearable! Cars and ambulances can’t get across even if the river is not full. Every time, they come and build a temporary bridge that doesn’t last; when the river is full, it just gets washed away. We are fed up now and we need the premier to help us,’’ said Mr Mweli.

Motorists travelling from Ladysmith to Dundee are advised to use alternative routes while the protest is underway on the R602.
