Fortunately, no one was injured and the flames were extinguished without incident.

A veld fire on Kirkland Street spread to the grounds of S.E. Vawda Primary School in Paradise a short while ago.

The fire is said to have set alight tyres on the property and also caused minor damage to an outbuilding. Fortunately, no one was injured and the flames were extinguished without incident.

Principal of S.E. Vawda, Themba Mgaga revealed there were only a few people on the premises when the fire broke out.

Residents are urged to be cautious during the drier season using the following supplied tips from Fire Services:

  • Avoid open flames
  • Keep property free of growth and dry vegetation
  • Make fire breaks around your property (if you are a farmer)
  • Avoid an accumulation of combustibles in an unprotected area
  • Do not risk making fires in an unprotected area on windy days
  • Try not to extinguish such fires by yourself and instead call 034 312 1222, irrespective of how big or small they are
