Ladysmith KZN: Premier steps in to stop illegal ‘digging for diamonds’

"It is concerning that in the wake of a looming third wave, we have so many people gathered in one spot"

People have been frantically ‘digging for diamonds’ in the Kwahlathi area, which is past Ekuvukeni and Uitval, since Monday (June 7). This comes after a mysterious stone was found in Ward 36 (Kwahlathi area) on the Imbulwane mountain.

KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala has now called for order and calm among the people of the area, and has urged all those involved to cease their operations and vacate the site to allow the Department of Mineral Resources to conduct a proper inspection of the site and what has been discovered.

It is said that the stone was found by a herdsman who originates from Lesotho. Since the discovery, people in the area have been digging in the hopes of unearthing a fortune.

The premier added that these illegal mining activities could be in violation of Covid-19 regulations. “It is very concerning that in the wake of the looming third wave, we have so many people gathered in one spot, not maintaining social distancing and not wearing masks. This could prove to be a super-spreader and might put many people at risk, including those who are not part of the mining,” said Zikalala.
