DUNDEE KZN: Orange Grove’s fortitude impresses MEC

A devastating fire destroyed the factory, burning down over 90% of the production, warehouses, fridges, laboratories, raw materials and finished stock.

KZN Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane Zulu, used the Premier and Cabinet visit to Dundee last Thursday to tour the new-look Orange Grove Dairy factory. The dairy is nearing the end of an exhausting rebuild following the devastating fire that gutted the historic business in April 2019.

She and her delegation were impressed. She was given a tour by Orange Grove’s Jabulani Khanyile and Anton Lee. The dairy’s capacity has been greatly enhanced, with the factory being about 1040 square metres in size, and merged with the storage facility of about 2400 square metres.

While the re-build has been hampered by Covid-19 restrictions and other factors, Orange Grove has never lost sight of the end goal to ensure that the area’s most iconic business be restored to its former glory. A devastating fire destroyed the factory, burning down over 90% of the production, warehouses, fridges, laboratories, raw materials and finished stock.

But the Durham family and their employees showed remarkable resilience and fortitude in ensuring that Orange Grove products would always be on the shelves and that the business, which is so important to the area, would continue. It is this mentality which the MEC was impressed by.

She and Premier Zikalala and the rest of the KZN Cabinet were in the area as part of the government’s Operation Sukuma Sakhe endeavours to receive feedback from the community on a range of service delivery issues.
