VRYHEID KZN: Commemorate Blood Donor Month by… donating blood, of course

The NKZN region is just behind Midlands when it comes to blood donations during the month of May.

June is National Blood Donor Month, and the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is kicking it off with a special focus on honouring existing donors. The need for blood has not slowed down and people still need blood transfusions in hospitals. The SANBS is grateful for every drop of blood donated by existing and new donors, and every day is a battle to satisfy the demand for blood. In honour of Youth Month, the international #GiveBloodAndKeepWorldBeating movement will use the youth’s idealism and passion for vital causes, such as those who are in need of blood. The movement also strives to create change, improve health and raise global awareness about the importance of donating blood on a regular basis. “Attempts to save lives have been at the forefront of all blood donors’ minds, and we want to thank them for their involvement and support. The growing realisation across the globe that giving blood is a life-saving act of solidarity, and that services that provide safe blood and blood products are a crucial part of any healthcare system, are among the core reasons we encourage you to continue donating and raising awareness about the importance of doing so,” said SANBS CEO Ravi Reddy. The NKZN region is just behind Midlands when it comes to blood donations during the month of May. Midlands are in the lead with 116.46%, then NKZN on 114.34%, followed by Durban South (104.02%), Durban North (92.43%) and Highway with 85%.

One unit of blood can save up to three lives and donating only takes 30 minutes, four times a year.

To become a blood donor, you must:

– Be between the ages of 16 and 75 years old;

– Weigh 50kg or more;

– Be in good health and lead a healthy lifestyle;

– Consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient;

– Commit to donating blood regularly.

SANBS will be in Vryheid on the following dates:

June 11 at Klipkerk from 11:00 until 18:00;

June 12 at PnP from 09:00 until 13:00;

June 19 at PnP from 09:00 until 13:00.
