NEWCASTLE KZN: Be alert – job scammers are trying their luck around the Amajuba District

Jobs at the Amajuba District Municipality are not for sale.

The Amajuba District Municipality has issued a warning to potential job seekers about a current job scam doing the rounds in the area.

According to the Deputy Director of Public Relations for the district, Sbonelo Cebekulu, there is apparently a criminal operating ‘somewhere within the district’ that is phoning people and promising them jobs in exchange for money.

“This individual pretends to have a connection with those in power to appoint people and requires those in need of job opportunities to contact him so that ‘arrangements’ can be made,” confirmed Cebekulu.

He said the municipality had become aware of ‘these dirty tricks’ following an enquiry from a suspicious member of the public who have been ‘offered a job’.

“This responsible citizen reported this to the municipality and provided proof of a recorded telephonic conversation. As the Amajuba District Municipality, we categorically distance ourselves from such unscrupulous individual/s and can confirm there are currently no interviews scheduled for any positions, and that no job opportunities are available through ‘connections’,” stated Cebekulu.

The municipality has therefore urged the public to be vigilant and not to accept any job offer they had not applied for or conducted an interview for.

Cebekulu also urged individuals not to hand out their CVs to people they do not know and to ignore messages and calls relating to such.

“Please alert the authorities, including the police, about any suspicious activities related to municipal vacancies being sold,” he urged.

He reiterated that jobs at the Amajuba District Municipality are not for sale and said if there were vacancies, the proper legislated processed would be followed, including the advertisement of the position/s and calling of legitimate interviews.

“Our interviews are also held in the offices of the municipality and there is no way a legitimate job offer would require you to ‘urgently meet someone’ outside our offices,” he concluded.

To verify the authenticity of any interviews and job placements for assurance, contact the municipality’s Human Resources Department on 034 329 7307
