ESTCOURT KZN: Free diabetes testing this Saturday

Take advantage of this potentially life-saving service

The Lions Club of Estcourt is sponsoring FREE diabetes testing on Saturday (May 29) at Estcourt Pharmacy, Hillside Shopping Centre, between 9am and 11am. Diabetes is a condition whereby the body is unable to maintain blood sugar levels within the normal range.

There are two types of diabetes, namely:
Type 1 diabetes – occurs when the pancreas stops producing insulin. It usually starts in young people under the age of 30, including very young children and infants, and the onset is sudden and dramatic. People who have type 1 diabetes must inject insulin to survive. Insulin dosages are carefully balanced with food intake and exercise programmes.

Type 2 diabetes – is caused when the insulin, which the pancreas produces, is either not enough or does not work properly. Approximately 85-90% of all people with diabetes are type 2, and many people who have this condition are undiagnosed.

Below is a list of some of the symptoms related to diabetes:
• Excessive thirst and hunger.
• Frequent urination (from urinary tract infections or kidney problems).
• Weight loss or gain.
• Fatigue.
• Irritability.
• Blurred vision.
• Slow-healing wounds.
• Nausea.

Should you be experiencing any of the above symptoms, you can be tested this weekend, free of charge. Just be at Estcourt Pharmacy (Hillside Shopping Centre) between 9am and 11am to take advantage of this potentially life-saving service.
