Ladysmith KZN: Chaos as water meters are stolen in the Plaza

Business owners said it was a nightmare trying to get hold of uThukela to come fix the problem

Water meters were stolen in the Plaza complex on Monday (May 24), causing chaos for businesses.

When business owners arrived at their premises the next morning, they found that the meters had been stolen during the course of the night.

Water was spraying all over the street and flooding the area.

To make matters worse, the businessmen said it was a nightmare trying to get hold of the district municipality to come out and fix the issue, as the call centre number wasn’t answered.

When they eventually got hold of uThukela, they were told they need to open a case and get a case number before anyone would come out and attend to the issue.

The business owners feel this is totally wrong, as thousands of litres of water was being wasted. “How can they only sort out the problem once they have a case number? That’s ridiculous!” fumed one businessman.

Only after the business owners went to the uThukela offices to complain did they send out workers later in the day to fix the issue.
