NEWCASTLE KZN: Municipal security team takes down would-be cable thieves

Five suspects were apprehended and a sixth managed to evade capture.

Last night (May 25) external municipal security staff apprehended five suspects who were in the process of stealing cables at the Ncandu Substation.

According to acting Municipal Manager, Vish Govender, the external security team, which was appointed by the Newcastle Municipality, caught six would-be thieves in the process of committing the crime and promptly gave chase.

“Initially, six suspects were chased but one managed to evade capture. The five that were caught were subsequently arrested,” confirmed Govender.

Mentioning that if the theft had gone unheeded, it would have ’caused havoc’ in the community, Govender reiterated the municipality’s commitment to service delivery.

“His worship the Mayor promised a safe city and we are delivering. We will not leave any stone unturned until we eradicate theft and vandalism in our city. The bakkie which was used in this crime seems to have been stolen from somewhere else. If the crime had gone ahead, it would have resulted in power outages and huge costs,” explained Govender.

He concluded by vowing the municipality would ‘root out theft at its substations’.
