Ladysmith KZN: Bowls tournament dedicated to Heinz

The tournament will be held annually

44 bowlers gathered at Ladysmith Country Club last Sunday (May 16) to roll their ‘woods’ and get close to the ‘jack’. A tournament took place in memory of Heinz Habermann, who passed away a few months ago in a motor vehicle accident. Heinz was a great sportsman who played both golf and bowls.

According to ex-committee secretary Glynnis Turconi, “Heinz was a great man; a friendly and family-orientated person.”

The idea of the tournament came about when Heinz’s wife, Pauli Habermann, decided to dedicate the game of bowls to her late husband. She wanted the players to have fun and enjoy themselves, because that is what her husband would have wanted… And indeed they had a great time.

Heinz’s father, Ray Habermann, travelled all the way from Bergville to play and pay tribute to his son.

The tournament will be held annually to honour and remember Heinz.

The teams played two games of 14 ends. At the end of the day’s play, the bowlers had a scrumptious lunch together and enjoyed a few drinks in the clubhouse.
