Ladysmith KZN: Dump yard fire causes havoc for Acaciavale residents

The smoke has blanketed the area, with a constant haze in the air

The landfill site in Acaciavale has long been a problem for residents living in the area, with the endless smell and constant litter, not to mention the smoke that fills the air when fires are lit.

From last week Tuesday, the landfill site has been on fire, with thick black smoke billowing up into the air in Smartiesville and the lower end of Acaciavale.

The smoke has blanketed the area, with a constant haze in the air.

Residents say that the smell and the thick smoke is unbearable, and at night they can hardly breathe in their homes.

To add to the situation, it’s unpleasant to go out of their houses or open their windows. Even hanging up washing is a problem, as it can’t be put out due to the smell from the dump yard.

The residents say they are tired of living in these conditions, and the municipality has failed them.

They plead for the landfill site to be moved away from the residential area so that the air can be clean again and not filled with toxic fumes.
