VRYHEID KZN: Gospel artist releases first single to bring people closer to God

“I write my own music and mostly I use Bible scriptures to create music, so this single is David’s prayer.

As a deeply devoted man of God, Johan Brian Cebekhulu has dropped his first gospel single entitled ‘Mabajabhe’, which was released on all digital platforms by April 29.

Cebekhulu, who is known in entertainment circles as ‘Mjovo’, was born at Ngwelezane Hospital in eMpangeni. He relocated to Vryheid, Mnvunyane area, in 1996, attending Grade 6 and 7 at Jojoseni Primary before going to Qweqwe High School. He then studied Mechanical Engineering at EWC (Ekurhuleni West College) in Gauteng. While studying, he managed to get an 18-month internship, after which he was hired permanently by the company that offered him the internship.

Mjovo is married to Sphesihle Cebekhulu and they have been blessed with two sons, Thapelo (4) and Nkosinathi (9).

Mjovo mentions that at first it was a challenge to adjust to the environment of Vryheid after living in eMpangeni. “I found it quite hard to get used to the place, because eMpangeni and Vryheid have their differences. My family and I were different; we came as born again Christians in the area and obviously we were different to the people there. Even at school, I could see I was different from my peers because I didn’t do specific things they did. But as time went by, we got used to the area and the people, and the people got used to us.”

Mjovo is the last born – he has four brothers and two sisters. He says that growing up around them was a blessing because their mother taught them to be united at all times. “I learnt to share from a very young age. My siblings and I would share everything; we were very close and looked out for one another, and we still do now,” he says.

Mjovo says music has always been a part of his life. At the age of 11, he played the keyboards at church. Now he is the music director and also composes lots of songs they sing at church. “I remember that every time we had a church service, we would sing for the congregation and they would be blessed in such a way that after the service, they would ask us if we had any CDs with the music we were singing during the service. That’s the reason we decided to record.”

He mentions that he gets his inspiration from different gospel artists, but he mostly loves a gospel traditional group called ‘Ncwandeni Christ Ambassadors’. “I specifically love this group because they sing what they live; they are born again Christians and I relate to their music a lot.” Mjovo says his single is for everyone, and anyone who listens to it will be brought closer to God.

“I write my own music and mostly I use Bible scriptures to create music, so this single is David’s prayer. We ask for God’s protection in our lives all the time – even when our enemies try to attack us, we will be protected by God. In these difficult times of the Covid-19 pandemic, we also ask for the Lord’s protection.”

He concluded by thanking his team (Bongani Cebekhulu, Nozipho Mngwenya, Nontombi Cebekhulu and Londiwe Mncwango) and a special thanks to his producer for allowing him to use his studio, as well as all the members of Zion Church of God in Heaven.
