NEWCASTLE KZN: Injured traffic officer airlifted to Johannesburg hospital

Traffic Officer, Nivesh Nair of the Newcastle Community Safety department was airlifted to Milpark Hospital for further care.

Nivesh Nair of Newcastle Community Safety has been identified as the traffic officer injured in a motorbike collision on May 12.

Nair was critically injured when his motorcycle collided with a light motor vehicle on Kirkland Street near the intersection of Sutherland Street.

“He sustained serious injuries and needed to be stabilised by paramedics at the scene before being transported to Newcastle Mediclinic,” confirmed a source who was at the scene.

Nair has since been airlifted to Netcare Milpark Hospital in Western Parktown, Johannesburg for advanced specialised care.

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, confirmed the incident and said that SAPS was investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.

“Newcastle detectives are looking into a case of reckless and negligent driving that occurred on Sutherland Street at 5.30pm on Wednesday, May 12. The complainant claimed to have witnessed an accident in which a car and a motorcycle collided, resulting in the motorbike rider being injured and taken to the hospital,” Arumugam explained.

The police investigation is still ongoing.
