Vryheid has many challenges, and residents are constantly up in arms about service delivery and the cleanliness of the town… However, regardless of the above scenario, the town of Vryheid is a finalist for KwaZulu-Natal in the Kwêla ‘Dorp van die Jaar 2021’competition. This prestigious competition is the brainchild of the Afrikaans DSTV channel ‘KykNet’. Three towns from each province, as well as three from Namibia, are selected and viewers / residents have to vote for ‘the best’ town. Vryheid is competing against St Lucia and Umtentweni as the other two towns in KZN. Each winner from a province will then compete for the ultimate title of ‘Dorp van die Jaar’. The prizes are phenomenal and the winning town will receive a tourism marketing campaign to the value of R1 million, a 45-second advertising slot produced by Homebrew Films for KykNet, as well as a huge ‘makietie’ for the residents of the town.
