NEWCASTLE KZN: Are play parks a thing of the past?

Would you rather have fewer parks which are better maintained and policed?

Newcastle’s play parks are being vandalised and misused at almost the same rate they are being repaired and maintained.

During a visit to the park on Oribi Avenue in Hutten Heights this morning, officials from Newcastle Municipality said they are now looking at cutting their losses, instead of diverting funds from ‘bread and butter’ service delivery issues.

Due to the level of vandalism, criminality and vagrancy common at parks across town, acting Municipal Manager, Vish Govender has suggested most of these areas be possibly rezoned.

“We could rather have strategically placed parks maintained at a high level, with security on site… We would like to get the public opinion on this.”

What are your thoughts on the state of Newcastle’s play parks and on the possibility of having less parks but better policed and maintained?
