DUNDEE KZN: Squash players wrap up first league of 2021

The Piet Mare Doubles League will be played as soon as things go back to 'normal'.

The first squash tournament of 2021 has been successfully completed and prize-giving was held last Thursday evening. “LJL Mining Services have always been loyal supporters of our squash club and we would really like to thank them for their continued support.

This league is played annually in memory of Luan Labuschagne, Lappies Labuschagne’s son, who was a valuable member of our club and a passionate squash player,” said the club’s Natasha du Plessis. Due to Covid restrictions, spectators were kept to a minimum and members played their games while maintaining Covid regulations.

The Piet Mare Doubles League will be played as soon as things go back to ‘normal’. The results of the LJL Mining Services League were: First place: Sifiso Kunene, Natasha du Plessis, John Flanagan, Tamarah Grierson and Ivan van der Stock. Second place: Mark Nero, Hanno vd Berg, Graham Peddie, Johan Whiteman and Krushil Sewmangal. Third place: Kevin Donaldson, Nozipho Hadebe, Werner Botha, Gavin Tuting and Ronnie Mulligan. The club congratulates new member Krushil Sewmangal on his outstanding performance on the court. He won all of his games 5-0, which resulted in a top score of 30 (full points) for his team. He impressed members with his rapid improvement in each game.

The other top players in their divisions were: Walter du Plessis (29 points), Andre Karsten (23 points), John Flanagan (28 points) and Johan Whiteman (26 points). Entries for the next league will open soon. “We would like to urge all players to enter this league to keep maintaining healthy bodies and minds. The game of squash is definitely a whole body and mind workout.

The mental and physical strain that squash puts on your body is what makes it a great game. There is not one dominating style that will always work, so it forces you to constantly be thinking and adapting your game to who you are playing against and what they are doing” – Julian Illingworth. “Join us and become smarter and fitter in one go!”
