NEWCASTLE KZN: Dealing with the stress and heartache of foster care

The foster mother at St Martins Village reveals some of the challenges she faces.

In two and a half years at St Martins Village, the foster mother (who requested her personal information be withheld) has seen the worst of abuse and neglect, but also seen families reunited and children on the mend.

She does not understate the challenges of the job when she says it is not an easy one.

The foster mother did reveal she gave up her own home to reside at St Martins, where she cares for children from as young as a few months old up to the age of six, for periods ranging from three to six months.

“I came to Newcastle in the 90s… My husband passed away in 2015 and a while later, I was approached by the Project Co-ordinator.”

Board member for St Martins Village, Pastor Thomas Beneke has further explained the role of the organisation in serving the needs of the community, and outlined its aims and projects.
