Ladysmith KZN: Body of hiker recovered after tragic fall near Cathedral Peak

The elderly man slipped and fell off the path at about 8400ft

A man of about 60 years old sadly passed away after a tragic fall near Cathedral Peak on Monday (April 26).

Jon Sargood from the Mountain Club of South Africa Rescue team said that a group of nine hikers were on a path between Cathedral Peak and ‘The Bell’ when tragedy struck at about 8400ft.

The elderly man slipped and fell off the path, and sadly succumbed to the injuries he sustained.

On Monday, the team from Mountain Club Rescue and a medic flew with a helicopter and found the man’s body.

The incident was then handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), who flew out to the scene in a police helicopter to recover the hiker’s body.

The Mountain Club Rescue team had been called out to Witsieshoek on Saturday night (April 24) and then again to Kloof Gorge on Tuesday night (April 27), being successful on both these occasions in finding hikers in distress and getting them assistance.
