Ladysmith KZN: Out-of-control illegal dumping in the CBD

The community is urged to report those who dump illegally in town

The corner of Illing Road and Thompson Street has become an eyesore as the scene of extensive illegal dumping. An angry businessman says that residents light fires there and dump litter all over the place.

He says these fires are hazardous and cause pollution. “It’s negatively affecting the environment and also the health of people living nearby,” fumes the unhappy businessman.

He adds that he can’t even stand outside in the fresh air, as the smoke suffocates him. “I don’t understand why people dump their rubbish at this corner. This has been an ongoing problem for many years now and I feel helpless; I just don’t know what to do.”

The businessman encourages the community not to dump illegally at this corner or anywhere else, and to report those who are flouting the bylaws of the town by offloading their refuse wherever they please.
