Andrè Swanepoel, head coach of the Newcastle Highlanders, said he had the pleasure of knowing Myeni back in 2015.

“Myeni was our first team’s number 7 (flanker) for around six months with the Newcastle Highlanders. He was a fantastic athlete who took advantage of every chance to demonstrate his abilities on the field. He was a nice guy with a decent demeanor. I was proud of him,” Swanepoel said.

During Myeni’s brief stint with the Highlanders, he was not only a star player for Swanepoel, but also lived with him for those six months.

“It took a while for news of his death to sink in,” admitted Swanepoel.

“When I first saw the story on the national news, I didn’t realise it was about our Lindani. After a few days, it became clear that it was Lindani, which was a sad moment for everyone at the Newcastle Highlanders Rugby Club…”

Swanepoel passed on his condolences and prayers to Myeni’s family and friends on behalf of himself and the Newcastle Highlanders Rugby team.

According to current national news reports, the shooting occurred at around 8.10pm on April 14, following a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress at a home in Nuuanu.

It was alleged by local media stations that the person who phoned 911 stated that a man was sitting in a nearby vehicle and identified him as ‘the suspect’ and said the man had been ‘acting strangely’.

According to police, Myeni then allegedly assaulted three officers before being shot and killed.

The Newcastle Advertiser extends its condolences to family and friends of Lindani Myeni.
